I once said it here- football is so dynamic. I guess every aspect of life is covered in it, not just on the pitch but even off the pitch too there’s always something going on. For the next few weeks- this blog will be taking an extensive look into the African Cup of Nations, what goes on around it and even a little bit of the after-effects just before the domestic season here in (Kenya) begins.
I always get fascinated by even the smallest things to do with football. Not long ago on this blog, I wrote something about Android Apps for football that one needs to download on an Android device. Well, today in the Cup of Nations spirit I hereby look at some of the most amazing AFCON tech apps designed to bring a different feel to the tournament.
Official sponsors of the Africa Cup of Nations, Samsung, on Tuesday (15/1/13) launched its fan zones for the tournament.
The fan zones, themed ‘Our Passion Powers Africa’, main aim is to bring the game to fans across the continent.
Apart from the fan zones in South Africa and Nigeria, fan zones are also present in Angola, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Zambia. The company is set to use its 20 brand stores and eight shopping malls for more fans to experience interactive activities that would allow them share their passion for African football.
Inside a Samsung Fan Zone, fans can show their passion towards their team and players by taking photos and sending them directly to the Samsung Africa SNS site which is part of the Samsung Ambassador mosaic. As a fan you can also write supportive messages for your favourite team on the smart spirit wall.
On Facebook though, the fans are not left behind. Fans will also be able to upload their images supply a special app for people to upload their photos and participate in competitions which will be on Samsung’s AFCON Facebook page
Samsung has also recently collaborated with one of Africa’s most popular artists, Don Jazzy, to produce the ‘Samsung Football Anthem’. Football fans can sing the song during Fan Zone events.
I can tell you this for free- this is among the first in Zimbabwe if not the first. Zimbabwe might have never made it to the AFCON but Zimbabwe has something for AFCON.
The best way I would describe this is ‘amazing’. Young people in Africa doing something for African football; one word ‘Brilliant’.
I did visit the FOOTBALLZONE website and unlike most sophisticated football sites in this side of Africa- this was so simple. And now they have a football app that’s was introduced into the market this year, the year is still so new, so you understand it’s a 2013 App.
This app which can be installed on almost all Nokia feature phones and smartphones provides live text commentary for all matches, group standings, fixtures, match results, full team profiles and detailed tournament statistics for the tournament.
It’s finally good to know that FOOTBALLZONE is one of the 3 winners of last year ZOL Jumpstart Challenge, a tech start up competition held annually for Zimbabwean start-ups by Jumpstart.
Here though is a screen shot I was able to get (From the OVI store of course), but according to your Nokia Device it might be a little different. You might be asking, why Nokia? They’re planning to introduce an Android app and a Blackberry App in the future so watch out for it.
Meanwhile the App can be downloaded from the Ovi Store
